Sedatives

Drugs that can cause sedation are perhaps the riskiest drugs that are commonly used in nursing mothers. Sedation and poor feeding is fairly common. Sedatives, such as benzodiazepines, can also cause infant sedation and one death has been reported. Short-acting drugs such as zolpidem for sleep have some safety data in nursing mothers and can be used. Be particularly careful when multiple central nervous system depressants are used concurrently.
