Hepatitis B Virus

Lactating parents who are Hepatitis B Surface Antigen + (hepBsAg+) have not been found to cause transmission of hepatitis B to their infants. Infants born to birthing parents who are hepBsAg+ should receive Hepatitis B Immune Globulin along with the hepatitis B vaccine within 12 hours of birth. These will eliminate the risk of hepatitis B disease in the infant through breastfeeding so there is no need to delay breastfeeding until after the infant is immunized.1 There is no absolute indication to pump and dump.
