Hepatitis B Virus

Breastfeeding by Hepatitis B Surface Antigen + (hepBsAg+) mothers has not been found to cause transmission of hepatitis B to their infants. Infants born to mothers who are hepBsAg+ should receive Hepatitis B Immune Globulin along with the hepatitis B vaccine within 12 hours of birth. These will eliminate the risk of hepatitis B disease in the infant through breastfeeding, and there is no need to delay breastfeeding until after the infant is immunized1.
