Zika Virus
The Zika virus is transmitted to humans from mosquitos and can be spread from human to human through sexual contact, transplacentally, and via blood transfusion. Transmission through breastmilk has not been demonstrated per the Red Book.1 The CDC notes that there are 2 studies showing Zika virus in breastmilk samples, but transmission of the virus through breastmilk has not been confirmed. The CDC recommends continued breastfeeding as the benefits outweigh the potential risk.2 There is no absolute indication to pump and dump.
